Over 40 tornados rip through Nebraska and Kansas

Several homes were damaged or destroyed when multiple tornadoes touched down in four northwest Kansas counties Monday afternoon.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service and dispatchers for sheriff’s offices said several tornadoes touched down in Gove, Wallace, Graham and Norton counties, damaging homes and farm equipment and knocking out power.

“The storm system started coming through our area in the morning hours (Monday),” said Greg Guillot, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Goodland. “We had at least three to five (tornadoes) on the ground, and there is a possibility for more over the next few hours.”

Guillot said the majority of the storms occurred in Norton County, near Almena.

“A very large tornado went through Graham County and into Norton County,” Guillot said. “It skirted — and barely missed — Almena.”

Spotters tracked the storm for nearly an hour as it moved from Graham County into Norton County.

According to the National Weather Service office in Goodland, the tornado was first spotted in northwest Graham County about 1:55 p.m.

It then moved north, passing several miles east of Norton, and damaged some homes at the eastern edge of Almena about 2:40 p.m.

“It was not light damage, by any means (near Almena),” Smith said. “At the worst point, there were three spotted tornadoes coming in from different directions.”
